Responding to Pontevedra in Daily Life
The Church begins the civil year by placing us gently under the mantle of Mary, Mother of God. On the 1st of January, we do not start with plans or resolutions alone, but with a Person — a Mother who receives us and leads us to her Son.
This feast reminds us of a profound truth: Mary did not merely give birth to Jesus in history; she continues to nurture Christ in the life of the Church and in our homes. When we entrust a new year to her, we are choosing to begin it the way God chose to begin our salvation — through her “yes.”
It is in this light that the message of Pontevedra finds its deepest meaning. When Our Lady appeared with the Child Jesus and revealed her Immaculate Heart surrounded by thorns, she did so not as a distant queen, but as a Mother wounded by the indifference of her children. Her request for the First Saturday Devotion was not a demand, but a maternal appeal — asking us to return, to console, and to love faithfully.
To honour Mary as Mother of God, therefore, is not only to celebrate a feast, but to live as her children. Every act of reparation, every Rosary prayed with attention, every First Saturday observed with sincerity, becomes a way of allowing Mary to shape Christ more fully within us.
The Five First Saturdays are not meant to be an isolated practice, but a Marian rhythm for Christian life — teaching us perseverance, humility, and trust. They invite us to begin again, month after month, placing our struggles, our families, and even our failures into the safe refuge of her Immaculate Heart.
As we enter 2026, the question before us is gentle yet personal:
If Mary is truly my Mother, how am I responding to her care and her request?
In Goa, we continue to see how parishes and families that entrust themselves to Mary experience renewal, not through extraordinary means, but through simple faithfulness. The mission of the World Apostolate of Fatima is to walk with the faithful on this path — helping the Church live the Message of Fatima as a grace for our times.
Let us begin this year where the Church places us — with Mary. In her Heart, we find refuge; through her guidance, we are led always to Christ.
